Institute of Chemical Biology

Chemical Biology is a modern interdisciplinary scientific field at the interface of Chemistry and Biology which deals with the application of techniques, methodologies and tools in order to study and manipulate the biological systems. A significant application of Chemical Biology is the discovery and development of potent bioactive molecules and diagnostic tools for diseases, while other applications are the development of innovative products of veterinary, agrochemical and nutritional interest.

Research in Chemical Biology encompasses the interaction of various scientific fields, like:
i) Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry,
ii) Synthetic Organic Chemistry,
iii) Biology (Structural, Cellular and Molecular) and Biochemistry,
iv) Biotechnology,
v) Biophysics – Bioinformatics,
vi) Analytical Chemistry, vii) Materials Science, and
viii) Agrochemistry and Agri-foo

  • The basic and applied interdisciplinary research in the field of Chemical Biology with the aims of scientific progress, health protection, as well as economic and social development of the country.
  • The development of innovative technologies and approaches related to the understanding and manipulation of biological processes and their organization systems, the discovery of bioactive compounds and the design – development of delivery and administration systems.
  • The promotion and support of innovation in order to produce products and services of high added value.
  • The interconnection and cooperation with industry and private companies, research and educational institutions, health service providers, scientific organizations and networks at regional, national and international level.
  • The contribution to the coverage of educational and research needs of the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Studies programs of the Departments of the University of Patras in scientific issues that fall within the field of Chemical Biology.
  • The dissemination of scientific knowledge of Chemical Biology and the achievements of the Institute to the scientific community, industry and the public
