Institute of Ancient Theatre

The study of Ancient Greek Theatre is a field of research where the disciplines of classical philology, classical archaeology and theatre studies converge. The aim of the Institute of Ancient Theatre is precisely this: to approach the subject interdisciplinarily and holistically, first as a literary genre, second as theatrical praxis, and finally as a cultural phenomenon that has marked classical antiquity and become a fundamental part of the ancient Greek cultural heritage.
Moreover, ancient drama has an idiosyncratic trait that renders it relevant to our contemporary reality and challenges the researcher: its incessant reception in works of World and European literature as well as in performative arts (regular stagings of Greek plays in Greece and worldwide). The Institute of Ancient Theatre aims to follow contemporary research tendencies and conduct research, which will contribute to shedding light not only on ancient drama as a literary genre but also on the ancient theatrical praxis as a multifaceted and diachronically influential cultural phenomenon.
  • The research and study of ancient theatre as a special theatrical code and a cultural phenomenon; the research of the extant dramatic texts of Antiquity from a literary and theatrological point of view; the research of the ancient theatres and archaeological findings and artifacts in general; the research of the reception of the Greek and Roman drama in works of modern and contemporary literature, theatre, cinema and other arts.
  • The publication of the results of the aforementioned research (monographs, proceedings, collective volumes etc.) in print and on line, as well as the supporting of the publication of the international journal on the ancient theatre «Λογεῖον/Logeion. A Journal of Ancient Theatre».
  • To contribute in the educational and research needs of Graduate and Postgraduate Programmes of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Patras.
  • To organize seminars and international educational programmes on ancient theatre.
